Vast Underground City Found in Turkey

Turkey’s Cappadocia region has long been designated a World Heritage site for its dazzling rock formations and more than 200 underground cities and villages, but according to government officials, a new discovery in Nevşehir Province could be the most extraordinary ancient find to date. The previously unknown subterranean metropolis was discovered by accident during a massive urban renewal project by the Housing Development Administration of Turkey, more commonly known as TOKI. Workers had demolished several hundred buildings and begun prepping for new construction when they stumbled upon a honeycombed network of cave entrances, tunnels and hand carved chambers in the area surrounding a Byzantine-era hilltop castle. The construction project has now been indefinitely postponed, and engineers and researchers have descended on the scene to explore the site’s labyrinthine interior.

Major California Faults Ready to Rupture

According to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), some branches within the San Andreas Fault System are locked, meaning that major earthquakes could be coming soon. This could affect millions living in the San Francisco Bay Area, as some of the fault lines are located underneath the heart of the area’s infrastructure. The research was led by James Lienkaemper and the results were published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

Antarctica Ice Melt is Changing Earth Gravity

A new study may help mankind understand the gravity of climate change.  West Antarctica has lost so much ice between 2009 and 2012 that the gravity field over the region dipped, according to an announcement Friday from the European Space Agency (ESA). New Buckyball crystal formed that can cut through diamonds!

The Buckyball is truly an amazing thing. First prepared in a lab in 1985, these interconnected, spherical lattices of 60 carbon atoms bonded together have found possible use in applications as varied as stopping HIV and helping us live to 150 years of age (maybe). Now, in 2012, scientists have found another lab-verified use for C60: It can be formed into a crystal so hard that it can cut through diamonds.
